Pastoral Care

As an independent Senior High School catering to international students St James College has a special role to play in the pastoral care of its students. Our students are living away from home, many for the first time and studying for major examinations that will determine entrance into university.

These students are not only learning in the academic sense, they are learning about a new culture and about how to take responsibility for their lives.

The keys to St James College's Pastoral care are an "open door" policy and the House System. The "open door" policy begins with the Principal of the School who is always available to students to discuss any issues of concern to them and continues through to the teaching staff and our counselling staff.

Academic Counselling

Advice on academic issues can be provided by individual Teachers, House Tutors, the College's Curriculum Co-ordinator, the Principal and a number of other staff with a wide range of experience of High School and University education.

Personal Counselling

At St James we try to provide a warm friendly environment for students. Most students find that they meet people quickly and get support from teachers, student services and other students when need be.

Even so, students can come across unexpected problems when studying, particularly if they are new to Sydney and away from friends and family. SJC offers a personal counselling service for students who feel they need extra support. Counselling can be for a variety of reasons, such as difficulty structuring a study routine, problems adjusting to living away from home, or other personal issues.

House tutors can provide a level of support to talk about issues. If students require further support, we offer a professional counselling service.

If you would like to arrange a Counselling Appointment, contact the Principal who will confidentially assist you.

Guardianship

For international students, as part of your student visa, the Australian Department of Immigration (DIMIA) requires that International Students in Australia who are under the age of 18 must nominate a guardian. It is College Policy that St James College acts as the guardian for students under the age of 18, for a fee of $30AU per week.

Student Cards

Every student at St James College is issued with a student card on their first day. This has their photograph and student number on it. This card is important and should be brought to school every day. It is used for identification and attendance.
